The Modern Pilates Essentials Edit

What You Really Need for Reformer & Studio Pilates

Pilates has changed — and so have the things we bring to class.

Today's Pilates essentials are less about having more and more about choosing well: breathable clothing that lets you move freely, a water bottle, a few thoughtful layers and, for many Reformer studios, a good pair of Pilates grip socks.

Whether you're new to Reformer Pilates or already have your favourite place at the studio, here's what deserves a place in your Pilates bag.

1. Pilates Grip Socks That Actually Fit

Grip socks may be small, but on the Reformer they have an important job to do.

A good pair should provide traction while still allowing you to feel connected to the equipment. Just as importantly, the sock itself needs to stay securely on your foot. A strong grip sole doesn't help much if the fabric twists, bunches or moves around during your practice.

That's why fit should be one of the first things you consider when choosing Pilates grip socks.

SHASHI socks are shaped specifically for the left and right foot, creating a close, anatomical fit rather than relying on one generic sock shape.

It's one of the things SHASHI wearers often notice first: they fit closely, stay where they should and feel exceptionally light.

2. Full-Foot Grip for the Reformer

Pilates uses the whole foot.

Depending on the movement, you may be pressing through your heels, the balls of your feet or your toes. On a moving Reformer carriage, reliable traction can make the difference between thinking about your feet slipping and concentrating fully on the exercise.

That's why SHASHI uses full-foot grip extending from heel to toe.

The aim isn't simply to create a "sticky sock". It's to give you consistent contact with the Reformer throughout different foot positions and movements.

3. Think Light, Not Bulky

Pilates is precise. You want to feel where your feet are rather than having them wrapped in a thick layer of fabric.

SHASHI grip socks are deliberately thin and lightweight, creating the barely-there sensation that has become one of the characteristics people love about the brand.

Less bulk also means less excess fabric around the foot — particularly important when you're working on controlled placement and alignment.

Barely there on your feet. Ready when you need the grip.

4. Breathability Matters

Your feet need to breathe too.

SHASHI's signature patented mesh construction was designed to increase airflow while maintaining a close, elegant fit.

Combined with COOLMAX® performance fibres and cotton-rich constructions in selected styles, the airy mesh helps make SHASHI particularly comfortable for Pilates, Barre and studio workouts.

It also creates something that has become visually distinctive to SHASHI: a grip sock that looks light because it actually is light.

5. Comfortable Pilates Clothing

Your Pilates wardrobe doesn't need to be perfectly coordinated.

Choose clothing that allows you to move comfortably and lets both you and your instructor see your alignment. Breathable leggings, fitted trousers, shorts and tops all work beautifully.

And modern Pilates style has become more relaxed and individual.

A simple neutral outfit can be paired with ballet-inspired socks. Leg warmers can sit alongside contemporary activewear. A touch of sparkle can work with black leggings. Your socks don't necessarily need to disappear into your outfit anymore.

They can be part of it.

6. Layers Before and After Class

A lightweight knit, sweatshirt, wrap top or cardigan is useful before and after your session, particularly through the cooler European seasons.

This studio-to-street approach is also one reason longer grip-sock silhouettes have become so appealing. Crew socks provide a different look and a little more coverage while maintaining the grip needed in the studio.

7. A Few Extras — If You Need Them

For home or mat Pilates, a Pilates ball, resistance band, ring or light weights can add variety to your practice.

For Reformer classes, most of the equipment is already waiting for you.

Which means your personal Pilates essentials can remain surprisingly simple:

something comfortable to move in, water, a layer for afterwards — and a pair of grip socks you trust.

The Best Pilates Essentials Are the Ones You Forget About

Once your class begins, you shouldn't be thinking about adjusting your leggings, pulling up your socks or wondering whether your feet will slip.

The right Pilates essentials simply do their job.
